How to include necessary rooms when you don’t have space

In many houses, especially older ones, the laundry room, mud room and storage space are often some of the first things to go when renovating. While these rooms may be small, they can play a big role in making your home more functional and comfortable.

If you’re tight on space, there are still ways to include all three of these rooms in your home. Here are a few tips:

1. Get creative with your layout.

There’s no need to stick to the traditional layout when it comes to your laundry room, mud room and storage space. If you have a long, narrow space, for example, you could combine all three rooms into one long linear space. Or if you have a corner space, you could create a L-shaped layout. Get creative and make the most of your space.

2. Multi-purpose whenever possible.

Whenever possible, try to multi-purpose each of these rooms. For example, your mud room could double as a laundry room or your storage space could be used for both laundry and mud room items. This will help you save precious square footage.

3. Think vertically.

When it comes to small spaces, thinking vertical is key. Utilize every inch of wall space by installing shelves, cabinets and hooks at different heights. This will help you maximize storage without making the space feel cluttered.

4. Keep it light and bright.

Since small spaces can feel cramped and dark, it’s important to keep them light and bright. Paint the walls a light color, install plenty of lighting and use mirrors to help reflect light.

5. Use space-saving furniture.

When furnishing your laundry room, mud room and storage space, look for space-saving furniture that can do double duty. A fold-down table can be used for folding laundry or as a temporary mud room table. A rolling cart can be used as a portable storage solution or as a makeshift island in your laundry room. Get creative and think outside the box when it comes to furnishing these small spaces.

Laundry Room Space Saving Tips:

Many people don’t have the option to put their washer and dryer in a larger room, so they’re forced to work with what they have. If you’re one of those people, don’t despair! It’s not just kitchen space that can be maximized, there are plenty of ways to make the most of your small laundry room.

Stacked Washer Dryer:

One of the best ways to save space in a small laundry room is to stack your washer and dryer. This will not only free up floor space, but it will also make it easier to transfer clothes from the washer to the dryer.

Hang It Up: Another space-saving tip is to hang as much as you can. This includes things like clotheslines, drying racks, and ironing boards. If you have the space, you can even install a fold-down table to make things easier.

Maximize the space in a small laundry room using tension rods. Tension rods are great for hanging laundry bags or extra hangers. You can also use them to hang a drying rack from the ceiling. This will free up valuable floor space in your laundry room.

Another way to make the most of a small space is to use wall-mounted shelves. Wall-mounted shelves are perfect for storing laundry detergent, fabric softener, and other laundry supplies. They also provide a place to hang damp clothes to dry.

Get Organized: One of the best ways to make your small laundry room more functional is to get organized. This means taking the time to find a place for everything and labeling everything so you can find it easily. This will save you time and frustration in the long run.

These are just a few of the many hidden hacks that can help you maximize your small laundry room. With a little creativity and effort, you can make your laundry room work for you.

And who knows, you might even find that you enjoy doing laundry in your small space!

Mud Rooms:

A mud room is a small room or area near the entrance of a home that is used for storing outerwear, shoes, and other items that are brought in from outside. Mud rooms are often located near the garage or back door of a home and usually have easy-to-clean floors such as tile or linoleum. Many mud rooms also have built-in storage solutions such as shelves, hooks, and cabinets to help keep things organized.

Mud rooms are especially useful in cold weather climates like NYC winters where people need to remove their boots and outerwear before entering the main part of the house. This helps to prevent dirt and mud from being tracked through the home. Mud rooms can also be used as a storage space for sports equipment, garden tools, and other items that are not used on a daily basis.

If you have a small home or live in an apartment, you may not have the luxury of a mud room. But that doesn’t mean you can’t still create a space for storing your outerwear and shoes. A small coat closet near the entrance of your home can easily be transformed into a mini mud room. Just add a few shelves, hooks, and baskets to store all of your gear. You can even add a boot tray to the floor to help keep things clean. With a little bit of effort, you can create a functional and stylish mud room – even in a small space.
